About

Dr Neil Coombs is an artist, writer and lecturer based in North Wales. Amongst other things, he runs Dark Windows Press. In recent years he has returned to painting and has been working on a developing series of oil paintings that explore his interests in deep ecology, animism, alchemy, panpsychism, surrealism and other fallacies.

Neil studied Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art, North East London Polytechnic and Reading University where he was a contemporary of some of the well known Young British Artists of the 1990s. Subsequently, he continued to make art in a variety of media while working as a lecturer in the creative arts for over 30 years, continuing with postgraduate studies, writing and exhibiting work sporadically.

His doctoral thesis explored the relationship between Surrealism and the films of Humphrey Jennings. In 2007 he published Studying Surrealist and Fantasy Cinema, in 2010 he published the novel Dark Windows and in the same year he established Dark Windows Press.

Since 2013 he has worked closely with Desmond Morris editing and publishing a series of books concerning Morris’ art and ethnographic interests.

This website is a repository for various works and information exploring the different facets of Neil’s output as an artist in a range of media as well as his publishing work through the Dark Windows Press imprint that he started in 2010.

“Neil Coombs is the future of the re-enchantment of our reality and of Surrealism in Great Britain. We should be following him closely”

(Professor Michel Remy, Infosurr 104, December 2012)
